Hanifah Nakiryowa, an acid attack survivor, has revived her allegations of the 2011 acid attack against her former husband, Dr. Faisal Buyinza. This happened right after 15 years of requesting Makerere University’s response to these claims.
Hanifah has recently released a biography that tells her story and has also gone ahead to give a narration of her story on social media platforms like TikTok, where she still claims her former husband is the mastermind behind this December 2011 acid attack.
This attack occurred at Mugenyi Flats, where he stayed when she visited her former husband, who was residing there at the time. This attack not only affected her but her young daughter too, who accidentally fell into a pool of acid, burning her as well. Both were then rushed to hospital, where they got access to medical attention.
Though Buyinza was charged with attempted murder, he still denied the allegations and kept his stand that he was in no way involved in this attack. Without witnesses, the case was subsequently closed, and he was therefore not convicted for the attempted murder charge.
Recently, she has told of how her former husband was her lecturer who demanded a relationship with her in exchange for marks that he withheld until she kept to his terms, where he demanded a relationship.
The university, though, responded on October 1, saying many complaints had been coming in about their member of staff and talked about their zero tolerance policy towards sexual harassment and that it could lead to disciplinary action.
This did not satisfy Hanifah, especially after what she had gone through or even get her the justice she deserved, and she therefore criticized it, describing it as insufficient. Nakiryowa has since become an advocate for survivors of acid, burns, and violence, founding the Centre for Survivors of Acid and Burns Violence. (CERESAV)
