Police in Kasese have impounded 54 motorcycles during a traffic operation rider without licenses and those carrying passengers beyond the permitted limit.
The operation was conducted at nyamwamba bridge by territorial police under the command of Rwenzori East Region Traffic Officer SP Moses Mutabingwa.
According to police, officers targeted motorcycle riders who were violating traffic regulations, particularly those riding without valid licenses and those carrying more than permitted number of passengers. A total of 54 motorcycles were impounded, including one without a registration number. Police said the rider of the motorcycle was arrested and charged and is awaiting court proceedings.
ASP Elly Maate, the Rwenzori East police spokesman, said the impounded motorcycles were taken to Kasese Central Police Station pending verification and presentation of the required riding licenses by their owners.
Maate said:
“The impounded motorcycles were parked at CPS Kasese pending the riders to produce the required riding licenses before their release.”
Police said the operation is part of wider traffic enforcement exercises being conducted across the country to improve road safety and enforce regulations governing motorcycle transport.
Maate said the operations are intended to reduce road crashes and protect both riders and other road users.
He said:
“The same operations are ongoing country wide to streamline the transport industry as a safety measure towards the riders as a means to prevent road accidents, because every life matter.”
Police have urged motorcycle riders to obtain valid riding licenses, comply with passenger’s limit and observe other traffic regulations.
The operation comes amid continued effort by traffic authorities to enforce road safety rules and reduce crashes involving motorcycles, which are widely used for public transport across Uganda.
