The vice president Jesca Alupo delivered uganda's position at a high level missing on implementation of the pact for the future in Africa held on the side lines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York representing President Museveni;
Alupo said, Uganda supports pact for the future adopted by UN member states in 2024 together with the global digital compact and the declaration on future generations. Uganda welcomes the emphasis placed on the Africa strategic priorities by the pact namely peace and security particularly the reform of the United Nations Security council.
Accelerating the achievement of sustainable development goals. Reform of the international financial architecture to better support developing countries. Ensuring secure and inclusive development of science, technology and innovation and empowering the youths.
Alupo said Africa's young population presents an opportunity for economic transformation but warned that the continent requires greater investment in education, technology skills and quality jobs. She also raised concern.
Over the debt burden facing developing economies. The critical one is the limited fiscal space and increasing debt pressure. Many of our countries spend a sizeable share of our revenues on paying off debt than spend investing in critical infrastructure and public services. In this respect, we call for urgent reform of the international financial institutions to grant developing countries a strong voice in decision making.
Uganda also backed reform of the United Nations Security council to address Africa's long standing under representation cooperation in implementing the 56 actions contained in the pact for the future.
Alupo's message comes against a difficult international backdrop. Opening the general debate, UN Secretary General Antonio warned that divisions across the world are deepening pointing to wars, inequality and growing pressure on the international system.
Enough is enough. I appeal to the leaders in this chamber to maximize this eye level week for de-escalation and dialogue and together, let's send a clear message from this all. The fighting must stop.
Humanitarian aid must flow and navigational rights and freedoms must be fully restored in accordance with international law.
United States President Donald Trump defended against Iran, but said this administration remained open to reaching a settlement. Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a greater country than it ever was before?
