Former speaker of parliament Anita Annet Among is attending a meeting of the National Resistance Movement’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) at state house Entebbe on Tuesday, marking a return to a high-profile political gathering after months away from the public spot light.
Among’s attendance comes more than five months after she withdrew from the race for speaker of the 12th parliament under intense scrutiny over corruption and abuse of office.
She was subsequently placed under house arrest with security operations at properties linked to her. At list five of the luxury vehicles were briefly impounded by security operatives, who also searched her former chambers at parliament
The Bukedea District Woman MP had been among the most influential figures in the ruling party, having served as Deputy Speaker before becoming Speaker in March 2022 following the death of Jacob Oulanyah.
Her political fortunes changed sharply in May 2026, when joint security teams searched her residences in Nakasero and Kigo, with investigations also extending to other properties linked to her, including in Bukedea.
The searches were linked to allegations including corruption, illicit enrichment, money laundering and abuse of office. The allegations were under investigation, and Among had not been formally charged in connection with the probe at the time she withdrew from the Speakership race.
On May 17, Among announced that she would not seek the Speakership, saying the decision followed consultations and was intended to preserve harmony within the NRM. She also pledged to cooperate with ongoing investigations. Her withdrawal cleared the way for West Budama South MP Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth to emerge as the ruling party’s candidate for Speaker. Parliament subsequently elected Oboth-Oboth to lead the 12th Parliament, while Thomas Tayebwa retained the Deputy Speaker position.
Among was later confined to her residence for about 100 days as security restrictions remained in place. In August, Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced that President Museveni had directed that Among be released from house arrest and would not be prosecuted over the allegations. Gen Muhoozi said the President had decided to forgive her.
The announcement marked a significant turn in a controversy that had sidelined the former Speaker from public political activity. Her attendance at Tuesday’s CEC meeting therefore places her back in the setting of the ruling party’s senior leadership after months of uncertainty over her political standing and public role.
The CEC is one of the NRM’s principal decision-making organs and brings together senior party leaders to discuss political and organisational matters. Its meetings at State House have previously played a key role in determining the party’s position on parliamentary leadership. Among remains the elected Woman MP for Bukedea and NRM Second National Vice Chairperson (Female).
Her return to a high-level party meeting comes as the NRM continues to organise its political leadership following the 2026 general elections. It remains unclear whether Tuesday’s meeting will address her future role within the party or whether her attendance signals any formal change in her political status.
