Youths and members of Kifumbiro Christian Fellowship Church located in Gayaza Kifumbiro have marked this year's National Cleaning Day with a compassionate community outreach to elderly people in the area.
Instead of only cleaning roads and trenches, the church team chose to clean homes of old people who can no longer manage daily chores, and also donated basic needs to support their daily lifestyle. The team was led by Tr. Juliet Namakula , a teens teacher at the church, who mobilized young people to take part in the exercise.
According to Tr. Juliet, they organized a cleaning drive where youths and teens armed with brooms, slashers, hoes and gloves moved from home to home. They slashed overgrown bushes, swept compounds, collected rubbish, and cleaned houses of elderly residents in Kifumbiro village.
In the picture captured during the exercise, four volunteers including women in the community can be seen actively cleaning along the roadside and compound edges in Kifumbiro - an example of the hands-on work done.
Tr. Juliet told YCI Falcon News that the initiative was inspired by the true meaning of National Cleaning Day.
"Cleaning should not be only about our own homes. As a church, we wanted to show the love of Christ by helping our Jjajas and elderly who are neglected and cannot clean for themselves.
She added that many old people in Gayaza Kifumbiro live alone and struggle to maintain hygiene, which affects their health.
Besides cleaning, the church also offered basic household items including soap, sugar and other daily essentials to the elderly to help them sustain a decent lifestyle.
One of the elderly beneficiaries, who preferred not to be named, thanked the church: "I am very happy. These children have cleaned my compound which I have not been able to do for months. May God bless Kifumbiro Christian Fellowship Church."
On behalf of the church, Tr Juliet called upon other churches, youth groups, and residents of Gayaza to emulate the act, especially during national activities.
The National Cleaning Day, locally known as Bulungi Bwansi, is aimed at promoting a clean, healthy environment across Uganda. Kifumbiro Christian Fellowship Church has shown that the day can also be used to promote care for vulnerable groups.
